STOP THE GENOCIDE IN DARFUR
Send a Free ANCA WebFax Today in Support of S.495 and H.R.1424
Current Status

This year, as the world marks the 90th anniversary of the still unresolved Armenian Genocide, please join us in honoring the memory of the victims of this atrocity by doing your part to stop the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan.

You can make a difference by urging on your elected officials in Congress to adopt legislation calling for decisive U.S. action in stopping the genocide in Darfur, urging international sanctions against the Sudanese government and the appointment of a U.S. Presidential Special envoy to deal with the crisis.

The Darfur Genocide Accountability Act of 2005 (S. 495) was introduced in the Senate by Jon Corzine (D-NJ) and Sam Brownback (R-KS). Reps. Donald Payne (D-NJ) and Thomas Tancredo (R-CO) introduced a similar bill, H.R. 1424, in the House.

Sample Letter to Members of Congress

Dear Senator:

I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor the Darfur Accountability Act of 2005, S. 495.

As you know, on July 22nd of last year, the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate declared that the atrocities in Darfur, Sudan were in fact a genocide. On September 9th, then Secretary of State Colin L. Powell stated that the atrocities committed in Darfur constituted genocide. I write to ask you to now take action to end the genocide in Darfur.

In the last two years, an estimated 300,000 people have either been killed or died from disease in Darfur and another 1.8 million have been driven from their homes. The Darfur Accountability Act would help end the cruel suffering of hundreds of thousands of civilians and help ensure that more are not killed. The Act would call for a new U.N. Security Council resolution instituting sanctions against the government of Sudan; extend the current arms embargo to cover the government of Sudan; call for the freezing of assets of those responsible for genocide and war crimes; accelerate assistance to the African Union mission in Darfur; call for a military no-fly zone; and call for the prompt prosecution and adjudication in a competent international court of justice of those responsible for violations of international human rights and humanitarian law.

The international community watched as Turkey killed over 1.5 million Armenian civilians and drove hundreds of thousands of Armenians into the desert to die. After this first genocide of the 20th Century, the nations of the world pledged to prevent such atrocities in the future. And yet, over 6 million Jews and millions of others were exterminated by the Nazis during World War II. The world community again vowed to stop future atrocities, proclaiming, "Never again." And yet again, over 1.7 million Cambodians were killed under Pol Pot’s repressive regime in the 1970’s, and less than 20 years later after that, 800,000 Tutsi civilians were slaughtered in Rwanda in 1994. I urge you to take action to end this cycle and move us to finally realize the call – “Never again.”

If you would like to learn more about ongoing efforts to end the cycle of genocide, please contact the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) at (202) 775-1918 or anca@anca.org.

Sincerely,

Background:

Since 2003, government forces and militias have killed over 200,000 in Darfur and caused the starvation of an additional 200,000. It is now estimated that 35,000 people are dying each month in Darfur and that this figure could rise to 100,000 per month, according to Jan Egeland, the UN Undersecretary for Humanitarian Affairs, if humanitarian assistance is unable to reach people due to the continued violence.
