Sample letter to local PBS affiliates urging them not to give air-time to Genocide deniers
Dear Sir / Madam:
I am writing to urge you - in the name of journalistic integrity, historical accuracy, and basic morality - not to provide a platform for Armenian Genocide deniers.
I refer specifically to a profoundly troubling panel discussion that was produced by PBS in order to follow the broadcast this April of the highly anticipated documentary "The Armenian Genocide" by Two Cats Productions. Amazingly, PBS invited two known deniers of the Armenian Genocide, Justin McCarthy and Omer Turan, to take part in this 25-minute production. Offering a television audience to these spokesmen for the Turkish government's denial campaign would represent a great disservice to your viewers and a tragic setback to your station's standing in our community - akin to following a documentary on the Holocaust with a discussion with deniers of this brutal crime against all humanity.
You may be interested to know that Members of Congress are currently circulating a letter calling on PBS not to broadcast this panel discussion. In their letter, they stress that, "a commitment to balance does not mandate the inclusion of opinions that are objectively false." Thankfully, their common sense and the views of citizens across the country are being heard, as a growing number of major PBS affiliates across the country are announcing that they will not show the panel-discussion. Among these are KCET (Los Angeles), WNET (New York), WGBH (Boston), KVPT (Fresno), KOCE (Orange County), WPBT (Miami), WHYY (Philadelphia), and WETA (Washington, DC).
I appreciate your consideration of my views and would welcome hearing back from you about how will be addressing my concerns.
Sincerely yours, |
