Providence, RI- Over 200 community activists joined the Armenian National Committee of Rhode Island (ANC-RI) is support of its annual Meet the Candidates Picnic, which took place on Sunday, September 21st.
"The ANC of Rhode Island is proud that we were able to bring such a large and diverse range of candidates to meet and interact with our community. From local school committee members to United States Congressmen and Senators, our years of grassroots activism and involvement in the Rhode Island political process has enabled us to form close, lasting ties with all levels of elected officials," commented Steve Elmasian, ANC of RI Co-Chairman.
Now in its 6th year, the Meet the Candidates Picnic is an event that is well attended by local and state representatives. This year, those in attendance included a 'who’s who' of elected officials in our state. Among those who attended were the following; US Senator Jack Reed, US Congressman Patrick Kennedy, US Congressman James Langevin, Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis, State Treasurer Frank Caprio, Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi, State Senator Hanna Gallo, State Senator Leonidas Raptakis, State Rep. Arthur Corvese, State Rep. Steven Costantino, Providence City Councilman John Lombardi, Providence City Councilman Nicholas Narducci, Cranston School Committee Woman Andrea Iannazzi, Lincoln School Committee Woman Kristine Donabedian Jawharjian.
Also present as candidates for office were Allan Fung running for the office of Mayor in the City of Cranston, Christine Spaziano and Anthony Demmings both seeking state senate seats and Julie Bedrosian Colangelo running for school committee in Cranston.
Those that were unable to attend but sent their best wishes were US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts, Providence Mayor David Cicilline and State Senator Maryellen Goodwin.
Following dinner, ANC-RI Co-Chairmen Stephen Mesrobian and Stephen Elmasian, presented citations to the 48 individuals who sponsored Armenian flags in memory of loved ones, as part of the 3rd annual “Flags Over Rhode Island Program”. The flags were flown at a city or town hall of their choice this past April 24th. The ANC of Rhode Island is proud of the fact that all 39 cities and towns in the state pay respect to the martyrs and survivors of the first Genocide of the 20th century by flying a flag at their municipal buildings.
