PROVIDENCE, RI – The Armenian National Committee of Rhode Island held a picnic following church services on Sunday, September 26th, 2004 honoring those elected officials who have supported our activities and causes over the years. A large crowd enjoyed delicious shish, losh and chicken dinners while getting a chance to meet and greet a very impressive group of lawmakers who have reliably served our community over the years.
Present were US Senator Jack Reed, US Congressmen Jim Langevin and Patrick Kennedy. Secretary of State Matt Brown attended the picnic along with Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey and Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian. State Senators Frank Caprio and Hanna Gallo along with State Representative Stephen Costantino joined the community to discuss issues of importance to Armenian-Americans. Former State Senator Aram Garabedian running for city council in Cranston and Andrea Ianazzi, who is running for a school committee seat in Cranston attended.
Federal Magistrate Jacob Hagopian and Senior Associate Justice Haiganush R. Bedrosian were also present.
Doug Geogerian, the new executive-director of the Armenian National Committee of America Eastern Region, introduced himself to the community and briefly spoke about the ANC of Rhode Island’s accomplishments. “This is a highly pro-active community, whose political awareness and involvement has clearly impacted the decisions of its elected officials. When it comes time to gain signatures or sponsorship from members of congress for the various legislative initiatives of our office in Washington, U.S. Representatives and Senators from Rhode Island are often the first to do so. Your dedication explains their readiness to support the Armenian Cause,” said Geogerian.
“Rhode Island’s Armenian-American community is honored to have such tremendous support among its elected officials. Whether is be mayors hosting a flag raising of the tri-color at their city or town hall in April, a lawmaker sponsoring resolutions at the State House or our members of Congress fighting for the passage of a genocide resolution in Washington, our community is extremely proud and grateful for such commitment and friendship,” said ANC activist Steve Elmasian.
Absent from the gathering was U.S. Senator Lincoln Chaffee. ANC of Rhode Island chairman, Stephen Mesrobian, remarked that it was time for the community to enlist Senator Chaffee’s support. “There is no reason for Senator Chaffee not to be present on such an occasion. It’s time he get on board with our community,” said Mesrobian. U.S. Representative Jim Langevin encouraged the Armenian National Committee to persevere and promised to continue to back our effort to get the Armenian Genocide recognized. ANC activists also raised with their elected officials the need to maintain military aid parity between Armenian and Azerbaijian along with getting final passage of Permanent Nation Trade Relations status for the Republic of Armenia.
