Nevada Armenian Genocide Recognition

Nevada legislators have recognized the Armenian Genocide on the state level. Gubernatorial proclamations as well as state and local legislation are provided below since 1968.  If you know of other documents to be added to this list – old or new – please send a note to elizabeth@anca.org. We look forward to showcasing them.

Nevada citizens also played an active role in assisting Armenian Genocide survivors through the Congressionally mandated Near East Foundation, during the years 1915 – 1930.  Learn more about their efforts below, through research prepared by the ANCA Western Region’s “America We Thank You” program.

And finally, review our snapshot of news coverage of the Armenian Genocide in Nevada press, as we spotlight three articles, prepared as part of the ANCA’s “Genocide Diary” project.  Check back to the Genocide Diary’s Nevada page for new articles added on a monthly basis.

April 24, 1968

WHEREAS, all over the country, in big cities and small towns, where there are Armenians, this 24th day of April is observed as “ARMENIAN MARTYR’S DAY”. This in memory of the two million of their people who lost their lives in 1915. They were offered the choice of denying their Christian faith or be expelled from their land, home and means of livelihood. They preferred to die in glory than live in ignominy. WHEREAS, about one million of them, by dint of good fortune managed to survive and at the end of the war scattered to the four corners of the world; and

WHEREAS, we have a number of them among us here in Las Vegas. Few of them are well known and prominent persons as investors, hotel owners and managers and some as businessmen and artisans, all law-abiding good citizens.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ORAN K. GRAGSON, Mayor of the City of Las Vegas do hereby proclaim the day of April 24, 19 68 as

ARMENIAN MARTYR’S DAY

In the name of the people of Las Vegas we offer them our deep feelings and heartfelt sympathies for this memorable occasion.

Nevada’s Support for Survivors of the Armenian Genocide

Nevada was an integral supporter of Near East Relief (NER), the American-led campaign that quickly sparked an international response with its unprecedented humanitarian endeavor, mobilizing all segments of American citizenry including elected officials, celebrities and laypersons alike, to help rescue victims of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey from 1915-1930.

Nevada facilitated its relief efforts from neighboring California’s headquarters of Near East Relief located at 333 Mills Building in San Francisco.

Nevada’s NER committee organized community meetings to raise awareness about the plight of the Armenians and their suffering and distress overseas.
