YEREVAN (ARMENPRESS)—Ida Alamuddin, the granddaughter of Jakob Kunzler, also known as Papa Kunzler, who was an eyewitness to the Armenian Genocide and saved the lives of thousands of Armenian orphans, visited the head of the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I.

Alamuddin, who is also currently the director of the Armenian orphanage in Ghazir, Lebanon, met with His Holiness Aram I, where a number of topics related to Papa Kunzler’s life and work were discussed.

Aram I announced at the meeting that he would take part in a ceremony on the centennial of the Armenian Genocide dedicated to Papa Kunzler. Alamuddin will also attend the ceremony.

Jakob Kunzler was a Swiss doctor and evangelist stationed in Urfa with an oriental mission at the time of the Armenian Genocide. He and his wife Elizabeth assisted in the evacuation of some 8,000 Armenian orphans with the Near East Relief program out of Turkey. In 1923, Kunzler and his wife took over an orphanage in Ghazir, Lebanon where they continued to care for orphans and pursue other humanitarian initiatives for 25 years.
