LA CRESCENTA, Calif.—On Saturday, October 22, 2016, the Board of Regents of Prelacy Armenian Schools hosted an orientation for School Board members, Principals and Directors at Vahan and Anoush Chamlian Armenian School.

Lisa Gaboudian, Chairperson of the Board of Regents of Prelacy Armenian Schools, welcomed all of the participants to the meeting and thanked the Chamlian administration for graciously providing their facilities and resources for the training. She highlighted the significant role of the School Board members who volunteer their time and effort to further advance the Prelacy Armenian Schools’ educational mission and shared the Board of Regents’ Strategic Plan. These objectives include: Deliver on Academic Excellence, Propel the Armenian Language and Heritage Education and Drive Sound Governance and Operational Excellence.

“The Board of Regents believes the most complex problems need to be heard by our local leaders,” said Gaboudian, who has served as an Instructional Director with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). “By investing in our School Board members, we are supporting these volunteers who are best positioned to make long-lasting change for the children in our Armenian communities.”

Following the Chairwoman’s welcoming remarks, Board of Regents member Armineh Papazian presented the Prelacy Armenian Schools Teacher Growth and Development Cycle, a process based on the California Teaching and Learning Framework. This process offers teachers an opportunity to reflect on their practice, rate themselves on a continuum of criteria and set improvement goals for the school year. It also focuses on research-based teaching practices that will help to prepare all students to be successful and productive 21st Century learners.

Board of Regents members Sarkis Ourfalian and Lena Kortoshian presented the duties and responsibilities of School Boards as indicated in the Bylaws of the Armenian Prelacy Schools. The second portion of the orientation focused on an array of cross-sector group activities led by Mrs. Kortoshian, which allowed School Board members from various Prelacy Armenian schools to collaborate on solving educational challenges. The activities also served as a valuable opportunity for School Board members, Principals and Directors to share successful programs at their schools, and engage in meaningful discussions with each other.

Over the past several years, the Board of Regents has committed to reinvigorating and broadening the role and participation of the School Board members who assist the Prelacy Armenian Schools and Preschools. As part of delivering on this commitment, the Board of Regents looks forward to encouraging progress and facilitating more discussions about the path forward by hosting similar meetings throughout the academic year based on feedback from School Board members.
