Nune Yesayan Performs in DC as Part of Centennial Tour

World-renowned Armenian pop singer Nune Yesayan recently concluded her nation-wide concert tour in the United States. Led by the efforts of the Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Society, under the auspices of the Ministry of Diaspora of the Republic of Armenia, the concert tour was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Nune Yesayan’s performance was thematically titled after the famous words of 20th-century Armenian, poet Baruyr Sevag: “Gank, bidi linenk, ou ter shadanank.” This famous line directly translates to, “We exist, we will exist, and we will continue to grow,” epitomizing the resilience of the Armenian people.

After successfully concluding her tour in the United States Western Region, Yesayan’s first stop on the East Coast was in Washington, D.C., where some of this year’s most notable Armenian Genocide Centennial commemorative events were held. The concert in Washington was held on Oct. 10 at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). The Hamazkayin New Jersey Nayiri Dance Ensemble was invited to accompany Nune Yesayan on stage, and put on a delightful performance for the Greater Washington Armenian community.

Among the attendees at the concert was Hrachia Tashchian, deputy chief of the Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia to the United States; Robert Avetisyan, representative of the Nagorno-Karabagh Republic (NKR/Artsakh); Hovsep Avakian, member of the ARF Eastern Region Central Committee; Dr. Dikran Kazanjian, chair of Hamazkayin Regional; Der Sarkis Aktavoukian, pastor of Soorp Khach Armenian Apostolic Church; and Der Hovsep Karapetyan, pastor of St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic Church. Opening remarks at the concert were made by Shooshan Der-Hakopian-Soghomonian, the president of the Hamazkayin of Greater Washington.

Ultimately, the “Gank, bidi linenk, ou ter shadanank” concert in Washington was a great success, thanks to Nune Yesayan’s wonderful performance accompanied by the talented Hamazkayin Nayiri Dance Ensemble. “As we remember the 100th commemoration of the genocide, it is Armenian culture first and foremost which has kept us alive and connected to our nation and heritage,” Kazanjian said. “Nune’s North America concert tour became the perfect instrument to perpetuate the eternal bridge between diaspora and fatherland via culture and cooperation between the Hamazkayin Eastern Region and the Armenian Diaspora.” All proceeds from the Nune Yesayan albums sold during her nationwide tour went to the Syrian Armenian Relief Fund.
