Poem: Nightfall

By Ruben Sevak, 1914
Translated by Tatul Sonentz

Night falls, cloudless, boundless —

What words, clear and sparkling,

Fit this holy instant free of stress?

Oh, pure ecstasy of existing…!

The distant vessel disappears,

Illusive, the lake fades to nothing,

Only witness, the swish of waters.

The pure bliss of breathing…!

Myriad stars above the lights below,

In the soulful haze of diffuseness

Rock, brook, plant hail soft and low.

Oh, all things alive in happiness…!

Then tolls clearly the chapel’s bell.

Beneath those trees, aged, forlorn,

Under this total contentment’s spell,

Serenity of turning into stone…!
