10/07/24 - Rep. Malliotakis posted the following to Facebook: "Today I joined my Greek-American House colleagues in welcoming Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Washington, and enjoyed a productive discussion on the issues affecting Greece and the strong relationship between Greece and the United States. I was pleased to hear that the relationship between Greece and Turkey is improving, that there have been no violations of Greece’s airspace by Turkey in 18 months, and that Turkey has also been cooperating on issues of migration. This is obviously credited to the strong leadership of Prime Minister Mitsotakis and his cabinet, as well as the work we have done as Members of Congress to put pressure on Turkey to stop its military flights over the Greek Islands. We also received an update on the upgrading of Greece’s military equipment, including purchases made for U.S. F-35 aircrafts and naval frigates, along with issues relating to North Macedonia, Hezbollah terror threats in Lebanon, the upcoming solemn 50th anniversary of the illegal occupation of Cyprus and the role Greece is playing to resolve the issue. I'm also pleased to learn that progress is being made in the shared goal to reopen the Halki seminary school in Turkey that has been closed for decades. As a Greek-American whose father comes from the same island of Crete where Mitsotakis hails, it’s refreshing to see the significant investment and improvements he has made to Greece’s economy, military and energy independence, and I look forward to continuing our work together to strengthen our partnership in these areas."
