ANCA Rapid Responder Letter: Ask Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader McCarthy to Save Artsakh Aid

Letter to Democratic Members of Congress Asking Them to Contact Speaker Pelosi to Help Save Artsakh Aid

Dear Representative:

Please ask Speaker Pelosi to save the U.S. humanitarian de-mining program in Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh).

This modest American investment in peace (only $1.5 million a year) has already cleared tens of thousands of landmines and saved countless lives, but much more work remains to be done.

Over the past three years, the U.S. House has passed two amendments to the State-Foreign Operations bill in support of this aid program, the Valadao Amendment (2017) and the Cox Amendment (2019). In addition, over 130 U.S. legislators, from both houses of Congress, have co-signed letters to prevent tge Administration from pulling the plug on this life-saving initiative.

Artsakh – an ancient Armenian land, cradle of early Christianity, and proud democratic republic – is struggling to survive on the frontiers of faith and freedom. Cutting this humanitarian program short will only leave landmines in the ground and unexploded ordnance scattered across the Artsakh landscape – where these weapons of war will take the lives and limbs of villagers, farmers, and – all too often – children.

The United States should not abandon this life-saving work – particularly under pressure from a foreign government. The corrupt Aliyev regime of Azerbaijan, which has recently received more than $100 million in military aid from the Administration, has no right to dictate U.S. foreign assistance policy.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to hearing of your actions in support of Artsakh aid.
