ANCA Rapid Responder Letter: Sanction Turkey Now; Pass Armenian Genocide Legislation

Dear Senator / Representative:

I am writing to ask you to work for the immediate passage of the strongest achievable Turkey sanctions in response to Ankara’s invasion of northern Syria and atrocities against Kurds, Armenians, and other at-risk Christian, Yazidi, and Muslim civilian populations.

As is all too evident today, the political identity of the modern Turkish Republic was, in many ways, shaped by the unwillingness of the international community to hold it responsible for the Armenian Genocide or to seek justice for the victims of this crime. This impunity, sadly, led to further aggression, invasions, and atrocities – including the attack on and occupation of Cyprus, and, of course, decades and abuse against Kurds, inside Turkey and, more recently, across the border in northern Syria.

To this day – even amid mounting American outrage at Turkish crimes – the President and Congress continue to enforce Turkey’s gag-rule against honest American remembrance of the Armenian Genocide. Turkey sees American silence as weakness. We cannot expect Turkey to respect the depth of American resolve as long as we are allowing its anti-American leader, Recep Erdogan, to revel publicly in the high-profile veto he wields over U.S. policy on a known case of genocide.

Please, fast track the enactment of harsh sanctions on Turkey and the passage of the Armenian Genocide Resolution (H.Res.296 and S.Res.150).

I look forward to learning of any actions that you take on this matter.

Sincerely,

Your generosity empowers our advocacy, inspires our work, and sustains our momentum.
