Letter to U.S. Senators and House Members Urging them to Support the Haiti and Armenia Reforestation Act of 2018
I am writing to ask you to cosponsor and work toward the timely adoption of the Haiti and Armenia Reforestation Act of 2018.
This environmental legislation contributes to responsible global environment stewardship by supporting healthy and sustainable forest growth in Armenia and Haiti, two friendly countries seeking to overcome financial and technical challenges to the realization of their admirable reforestation goals. This bill specifically authorizes the President to provide both Armenia and Haiti with grants and debt forgiveness to reverse the effects of deforestation and to meet specific targets for the restoration of forest cover – through, among other means, the adoption of sustainable long-term forestry strategies, policies, and practices.
I am encouraged by the results-oriented nature of this measure, particularly its focus on clear deliverables:
— Increasing Armenia’s forest cover to at least 12% of its total land mass within 10 years of the enactment of this bill.
— Increasing Haiti’s forest cover to at least 7% of total land mass within 10 years of the enactment of this bill.
The benefits of this legislation extend beyond forestation, as its adoption would materially strengthen America’s friendship with two international partners on issues of global concern.
Thank you for your consideration of my request, and for your friendship with Americans of Armenian heritage.
