ANCA Rapid Responder Letters: Expel the Turkish Ambassador

ANCA Letter to President Trump and Vice-President Pence

I am writing with a clear request – as urgent as it is imperative: Immediately expel the Republic of Turkey’s Ambassador to the United States as a demonstration of the depth of American outrage over the brutal May 16th attack ordered by Turkish President Erdogan against peaceful American protesters.

This expulsion should represent a first step, followed by a broad array of U.S. actions. America’s comprehensive response should range from demanding that Turkey waive all claims of diplomatic immunity and fully prosecuting all guilty of attacking peaceful demonstrators all the way to a fundamental reevaluation of the U.S.-Turkey bilateral relationship. We cannot begin to even consider normalizing relations with Turkish government until President Erdogan has personally apologized, on behalf of Turkey, to those he injured, the U.S. law enforcement officers he disrespected, the city of Washington, DC, the U.S. government, and the American people.

As President, you have full authority to expel Ambassador Serdar Kilic, designating him as persona non grata – including, among other authorities, Article 9 of the Vienna Treaty on Diplomatic Relations.

Anything less than immediately expelling Turkey’s Ambassador will fall short of demonstrating both the depth of our American commitment to freedom of expression, and the level of our opposition to foreign attempts to impose a gag-rule on the American people.

Thank you for your consideration of my request. I look forward to learning of your stand on this urgent matter.

ANCA Letter to Senators and Representatives who have already spoken out

I am writing to thank you for condemning the attack by Erdogan’s security guards on peaceful protesters in Washington DC and asking you to follow your strong statements by calling on President Trump to immediately expel the Republic of Turkey’s Ambassador to the United States as a demonstration of the depth of American outrage on this matter.

As you know, the President has full authority to expel Ambassador Serdar Kilic, designating him as persona non grata – including, among other authorities, Article 9 of the Vienna Treaty on Diplomatic Relations. Anything less than immediately expelling Turkey’s Ambassador will fall short of demonstrating both the depth of our American commitment to freedom of expression, and the level of our opposition to foreign attempts to impose a gag-rule on the American people.

In the House, I also urge you to co-sign the Bilirakis letter, which calls upon U.S. law enforcement to immediately identify and bring to justice the individuals involved in attacks on peaceful protesters. This bipartisan appeal demands that: Turkish personnel based in the U.S. who were involved in the attacks should be declared persona non grata and expelled from the U.S. immediately. Turkish personnel not based in the United States who were involved in the attacks should be barred from entry into the U.S. in the future.”

Thank you, once again, for speaking out on this attack on Turkey’s latest attack on American democracy and freedom of speech. I look forward to sharing your statement calling for the expulsion of Turkey’s Ambassador Kilic with friends and family.
