ORANGE COUNTY—Prominent community leader and activist Professor Harut Barsamian passed away Friday. He was 83.
Barsamian was instrumental in the development of the Armenain-American community of Orange County, providing considerable time and financial resources to the betterment and growth of the community.
He was the main benefactor of the Orange County Armenian Center, which in 2008 was renamed the Harut Barsamian Armenian Center.
He also created the eponymous scholarship fund at the Western Prelacy.
Barsamian was an internationally recognized engineer and information technologist with research interests in computer architecture and massive parallel computing, who had earned patents, publications, awards and honors. Dr. Barsamian was elected as Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Life Fellow, the highest honor of the organization, for his contributions in computer architecture, dynamic microprogramming and associative search algorithms.
Barsamian moved to Southern California in 1967, worked on air traffic control systems at Raytheon, explored concepts of microprogramming at NCR, integrated mainframe computing with mini-microcomputer systems at Sperry Univac, then started teaching at University of California at Irvine Since 1985, while doing consulting. He was also Adjunct Professor Harut Barsamian as teaching Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department graduate-level colloquia at UCI for free.
In November of 2012, The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the UCI held a ceremony to name a large classroom with a courtyard as the Harut Barsamian Colloquia.
Funeral services for Prof. Barsamian will be held at the Church of the Recessional at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale on Wednesday December 2, at 1 p.m.
