VAN NUYS—An integral part of the annual Homenetmen Navasartian Games is the various athletic competitions, which Homenetmen chapters prepare for throughout the year. The 2016 competitions were held between mid-May through the close of the Navasartian Games on July 3, 2016. During the finals weekend, the men’s and women’s basketball finals games drew in over a thousand spectators at the Birmingham High School’s main gym.

The women’s final basketball game was held between the Homenetmen Massis and Los Angeles Chapters and the Homenetmen Ararat and Shant Chapters came head to head for the men’s final basketball game. Victorious among these teams were the Massis Chapter’s women’s team and the Glendale Ararat Chapter’s men’s team, whose championship trophy was handed to the team by Honorary Presidents Mr. & Mrs. Katcho and Araxie Achadjian.

The Regional Athletic Council, alongside long-time administrators Sevag Garabedian and Fred Babajanian, with the leadership of Aram Thomas, Regional Executive liaison to the Athletics Division, meticulously carried out their duties to efficiently organize the 2016 Navasartian Games, which saw the participation of over 3,000 athletes in the following sports:

  • Basketball: 209 teams
  • Soccer: 44 teams
  • Volleyball: 20 teams
  • Track and Field: 143 athletes
  • Swimming: 72 athletes
  • Ping-Pong: 60 athletes
  • Tennis: 28 athletes

Beyond the events surrounding the Navasartian Games, Homenetmen chapters across the region also organize special events to commend participants and prepare for future games.

“Homenetmen recorded yet another successful Navasartian Games this year, thanks in large part to the support of our region’s 18 chapters and the community as a whole. We extend our greatest appreciation to Honorary Presidents Mr. & Mrs. Katcho and Araxie Achadjian, who encouraged us all and closely followed Navasartian’s games and events. We also acknowledge and recognize the numerous talented artists, who performed and created a lively atmosphere during the Navasartian Festival,” expressed Homenetmen Regional Executive Chairperson Manuel Marselian.
