SAN FRANCISCO, SUNNYVALE, California—The Genocide Education Project (GenEd) is hosting an event with Director Naré Mkrtchyan and Executive Producer Iliana Guevara of Oscar contending film “The Other Side of Home” on November 18 in San Francisco, California and November 19 in Sunnyvale, California.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that “The Other Side of Home” is one of the final ten contenders in the Academy Awards’ Documentary Short Subject category.
The Other Side of Home is a moving, personal documentary by Armenian-American filmmaker, Naré Mkrtchyan (40 min). Naré travels to Turkey in April, 2015, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, during which 1.5 million Armenians were systematically murdered by the Ottoman Turkish government.
Naré meets Maya, a Turkish woman who has recently discovered that her great grandmother was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide. Maya struggles to reconcile her dual identity, personifying the painful, unresolved conflict between the two nations and the manifold damage from generations of official Turkish denial of the Armenian Genocide. The documentary follows Maya as she decides to take part in the centennial commemoration of the genocide in Armenia to try to come to terms with her conflicted identity.
Born in Armenia and raised in Los Angeles, Naré Mkrtchyan holds a BA in Film Production from USC and has produced more than 60 short films.
Executive Producer, lliana Guevara holds a BA in Film Production from USC and recently produced a documentary series for Hallmark’s streaming company, Feeln.
The Genocide Education Project is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization that assists educators in teaching about human rights and genocide, particularly the Armenian Genocide, as the prototype for genocide in the modern era.
The event in San Francisco will take place on Friday, November 18 at 8pm, 825 Brotherhood Way, San Francisco, California.
The event in Sunnyvale will take place on Saturday, November 19 at 7:30 pm, 929 E. Duane Ave, Sunnyvale, California.
