Glendale’s popular hot spot Phoenicia Restaurant received the highest honors—five stars–during the 42nd annual Southern California Restaurant Writers Awards Ceremony. In addition to the Five Stars, Phoenicia also received the Golden Bacchus Wine Award, for offering an exceptional wine program.
Southern California Restaurant Writers, Inc. was formed in 1975 to improve the quality of the restaurant industry in the region. To further this objective, the organization bestows awards upon restaurants and individuals whose standards of quality and service deserve special recognition. These awards are presented at an annual ceremony.
The award winners are chosen from among restaurants stretching from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border. They are judged on food, service, ambiance and appropriate beverages according to the organization’s standardized scoring sheets which have a scoring range from 1 to 100 points. The five-star highest awards are bestowed on restaurants that receive a score of 95 or over.

Phoenicia Restaurant has long been a mainstay of Glendale, with owner Ara Kalfayan welcoming and greeting each diner to his Middle Eastern hideaway tucked on the corner of Central and Lexington avenues in Glendale.
A recent renovation and expansion of the facility has added more capacity, including a unique indoor-outdoor seating area covered by a recoiling tent.
Guests are treated to a wide array of Middle Eastern delicacies, including beef, lamb, chicken and fish kebabs, a variety of appetizers and desserts. Phoenicia also features music and entertainment.
