WASHINGTON (Combined Sources)—Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday called for “an ultimate resolution” of the Nagonor-Karabakh conflict, while the State Department reiterated the US position that the conflict must be resolved through the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group.
Speaking to Armenia’s Public Television Thursday, a spokesperson for the State Department said: “The United States remains deeply engaged as a Minsk Group Co-Chair in seeking to achieve a lasting, peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.”
“The final status of Nagorno Karabakh will be determined within the broader framework of a negotiated, peaceful settlement to the conflict based upon the Helsinki Principles of non-use of force or threat of force, territorial integrity of states, and the equal rights and self-determination of people,” added the spokesperson.
Secretary Kerry made his appeal during talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Thursday as the Azerbaijani leader is the Washington for the nuclear security summit.
“We want to see an ultimate resolution of the frozen conflict of Nagorno-Karabakh that needs to be a negotiated settlement and something that has to be worked on over time,” Kerry said.
Kerry reportedly thanked Aliyev for Azerbaijan’s contributions to NATO’s mission in Afghanistan, while also discussing democracy and human rights issues.
