PICO RIVERA, Calif.—Mesrobian High School Seniors served as Election Day poll monitors and took part in “Get Out The Vote” (GOTV) efforts for Election Day on Tuesday, November 8 with Hye Votes, an Armenian community GOTV initiative. Mesrobian Seniors spent the day in Glendale, observing election precincts, assisting Armenian voters, and working to get out the Armenian community’s vote in this historic election.

Continuing a longtime Mesrobian High School tradition, Senior Eva Mooradian, and Juniors Victoria Cinquegrani and Anush Ghoogasian volunteered with Los Angeles County as official student election poll workers at their local polling precinct.

“I had learned about voting in class but it’s completely different experiencing it in person,” said Mooradian.

Back on campus, students didn’t let the legal voting age stop them from discussing the issues — and portraying the personalities — of the US presidential candidates.

Pretend Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump debated before the student party today during a special election day Mock Presidential Debate assembly! The two presidential candidates were portrayed by Mesrobian High School Freshman Briana Godigian and Senior Alex Manoukian.

“The future is bright when the imaginations of our students are captivated and engaged with civic life,” said Berj Parseghian, who teaches Middle and High School History at Mesrobian, and organized the mock presidential debate.

Pre-Kindergarten and Elementary students also held special pretend elections in class where students put into practice terms they had learned such as “ballot box” and “presidential candidates,” creating fervor and excitement around civic engagement. Pre-Kindergarten voters were deeply divided on a choice between a Hippopotamus or an Elephant, while Fourth grade voters had a tough choice between Takis and Hot Cheetos.
