TEHRAN (Mehr News Agency) – National Iranian Gas Exports Company managing director has said escalation of gas exports to Armenia is subject to construction of new electricity transmission line between the two countries.

Head of NIGEC Alireza Kameli explained the latest status of exporting Iranian natural gas to Armenia saying “currently, an average of one million cubic meters of natural gas is being exported to the neighboring country.”

The official stated that gas export is carried out in exchange for the purchase of electricity between the two sides; “on the basis of a joint agreement, the possibility exists to increase the amount of gas exports by five times.”

He deemed the construction of necessary infrastructures as one influential factor in increasing the exports volume adding “according to the second phase of the sealed deal, the Caucasus is required to implement new power transmission lines for the exchange of gas and electricity between Iran and Armenia.”

“Armenia has recently initiated the establishment of a 400-kw transmission line,” recalled Kameli stressing “the construction process is estimated to last for two years.”

It is anticipated that the construction of new electricity networks will increase the volume of power trade between Iran and Armenia from the current 300 megawatts to about one thousand megawatts while about 70 percent of the construction will take place in mountainous areas.

One of the main advantages of the new power transmission line, besides development of electric exchanges between Iran and Armenia, remains as Iran’s electricity grid connectivity with Georgia and Russia providing grounds for power transmission between different countries of Caucasus region.
