MONTEBELLO, California—Garo Paylan, an Armenian Member of Turkey’s Parliament, met with Mesrobian High School students after attending church services Sunday. Students asked Paylan questions about his inspirations, his fears, and what he plans to do in the future.

At the afternoon’s Community Leadership Luncheon, Principal David Ghoogasian and Mesrobian High School’s Associated Student Body presented Paylan with a Mesrobian School Honorary Service Medal for his heroism and dedication to the Armenian community.

Paylan is an activist and co-founder of the pro-Kurdish, pro-minority Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) which he represents in parliament. Last May, he heroically called for Armenian Genocide justice during a session of parliament and has since faced physical violence on the parliamentary floor and death threats. Paylan explained that President of Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has fired thousands of teachers and up to 100,000 public sector employees, all while killing Kurdish civilians.

Mesrobian High School Seniors Hrag Harboyan and Alex Manoukian, and Mesrobian School Board member and parent Berch Papikyan assisted with church services as they do regularly. They had a helping hand from Principal David Ghoogasian as well.

Armenian Mesrobian School, established in 1965, is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and has Ron and Goharik Gabriel Preschool (which serves students 2-5 years old), Elementary, Middle School and a college preparatory High School on the same campus. A major convenience for parents who may have children at multiple ages, Mesrobian offers a unique perspective and opportunity for students, teachers, and parents to grow together, and for students to get the attention and nurturing they need to be successful in school and in life. The High School curriculum is certified to the University of California. Mesrobian’s Alumni Network and Mentorship Program connects students with five decades of alumni who have distinguished themselves in fields as diverse as education, science, business, medicine, music, law, dentistry, chiropractic, politics, art, marketing, engineering, veterinary medicine, and psychology.
