03/14/12 - Response to a constituent regarding NKR -

Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding Nagorno-Karabakh. I appreciate hearing from all Pennsylvanians about the issues that matter most to them.

As you may know, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, significant ethnic violence occurred in Nagorno-Karabakh, a region disputed between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The conflict displaced hundreds of thousands of people and killed many more. Since the cease-fire agreement on May 12, 1994, between Armenia, Azerbaijan and the local authorities, bloodshed and violence has diminished; however, the lasting effects of war continue.

As your United States Senator and a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, I urge Azerbaijan and Armenia to continue to work to resolve their differences in a peaceful manner. I will continue to support the efforts of the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group to facilitate a political solution to the conflict in and around Nagorno-Karabakh. Please be assured that I will continue to monitor the situation in this region as it develops.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future about this or any other matter of importance to you.

If you have access to the Internet, I encourage you to visit my web site, http://casey.senate.gov. I invite you to use this online office as a comprehensive resource to stay up-to-date on my work in Washington, request assistance from my office or share with me your thoughts on the issues that matter most to you and to Pennsylvania.

Sincerely,
Bob Casey
United States Senator
