Menendez's first paragraph of his opening statement mentioned Armenian Genocide: 'Personally, I am incredibly appreciative of the principled position you?ve taken on the Armenian Genocide. In 2007, you wrote in Time Magazine ? ?a stable, fruitful, 21st century relationship? [with Turkey] cannot be built on a lie,? and I completely agree.' Sen. Menendez also closed the hearing by asking Power, if she believed that facts should drive our determination of genocide. Power said that she believed facts should drive our determination and analysis. He continued that she should know what he means and urged her to use her position to advocate for this position internally within the administration.
