10/07/19 - Rep. Spanberger posted the following to Facebook: "Last week, I traveled to Afghanistan, Turkey, and the Syria-Jordan border with a group of Republican and Democratic colleagues from the U.S. House. We met with U.S. military leaders, security, diplomatic, and intelligence officers, and leadership teams from our foreign partners. In light of everything I heard from our American servicemembers on the ground, I am even more alarmed by the administration’s decision to abandon support for our Kurdish allies.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), made up of our long-time Kurdish allies, has been a key partner in the battle against ISIS. The SDF has fought and died alongside American troops to combat the spread of terrorism that threatens the United States, our partners and allies, and regional security.

The administration’s decision to walk back our support of the SDF and invite Turkey to act aggressively in northern Syria is a misguided and catastrophic blow to our national security interests. This decision will further destabilize the region and make it harder for the United States to recruit allies in our ongoing global counterterrorism efforts.

I urge the administration to speak with the same leaders that I spoke with last week, and to work with them to develop a long-term counterrorism strategy that doesn’t involve turning our backs on the same allies we’ve promised to support." View the Facebook post here.
