WASHINGTON, DC – Armenian Americans welcomed Congressman Hank Johnson’s (D-GA) forceful remarks today on the House floor condemning the Sudanese government’s brutal, ongoing attacks on civilians in the Nuba Mountain and South Kordofan regions, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).
“Armenian Americans join with all those committed to ending the cycle of genocide in thanking Congressman Johnson for his strong leadership and his powerful words today.” said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. “We also extend our appreciation to Congressman Wolf for his longstanding efforts to protect the vulnerable population in Sudan, across Africa, and around the world. “We remain engaged with our allies in the genocide-prevention movement and our friends in the Nuba Mountain community here in the United States to secure the types of U.S. and U.N. action that can bring an end to Sudan’s aggression.”
In a stark call for action to stop Sudan’s massacres, Rep. Johnson stressed that, “we must not be intimidated by Omar al-Bashir’s bullying, or we may find ourselves saying: ‘never again,’ again.” The Sudanese President is an indicted war criminal and perpetrator of genocide against the people of Darfur. Congressman Johnson’s remarks can be viewed above.
In a July 6th statement on the House floor, Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA), the Co-Chairman of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, criticized China for hosting a recent visit by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir despite his responsibility for “atrocities unfolding against Christians in the Nuba Mountains.” On June 22nd, Congressman Wolf, in remarks before his House colleagues, warned that the people of Nuba might be destined for the same genocidal fate as the citizens of Rwanda and Darfur.
The ANCA took part today in a Genocide Watch meeting at George Mason University called by Professor Gregory Stanton, a former President of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, to develop and implement strategies to end Sudan’s genocidal attacks on civilians in the Nuba Mountains. An on-line ANCA action alert provides activists with a quick and easy way to make phone calls asking their Members of Congress to take immediate action to stop Sudan’s attacks against innocent civilians in the Nuba Mountains:
