REP. GEPHARDT AGREES TO CO-SPONSOR RESOLUTION MARKING 15th ANNIVERSARY OF U.S. IMPLEMENTATION OF U.N. GENOCIDE CONVENTION

Presidential Candidate Joins over 85 Representatives in Support of the Measure

WASHINGTON, DC – Former House Democratic leader and Presidential hopeful, Representative Dick Gephardt (D-MO) indicated his support for a resolution marking the 15th Anniversary of the U.S. implementation of the U.N. Genocide Convention, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA). Rep. Gephardt joins Democratic Presidential candidates John Edwards (D-NC), John Kerry (D-MA) and Joseph Lieberman (D-CT), who had supported similar legislation last year in the Senate.

Over 85 members of Congress have already agreed to cosponsor H.Res.193, introduced on April 10th by Representatives George Radanovich (R-CA), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Joe Knollenberg (R-MI). The legislation specifically describes the 15th anniversary of U.S. implementation of the Genocide Convention as a step “toward ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, the genocides in Cambodia and Rwanda, among others, will be used to help prevent future genocides.” The resolution also notes that, despite the international community’s consensus against genocide, “denial of past instances of genocide continues and many thousands of innocent people continue to be victims of genocide.”
