SENATE DEMOCRATIC LEADER HARRY REID ENDORSES ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RESOLUTION

Elizabeth Dole Joins Senators Reid and Sarbanes as Co-sponsors, Bringing the Total Number of Supporters to Twenty-Five

February 3, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC – Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) was joined this week by North Carolina Republican Elizabeth Dole and Maryland Democrat Paul Sarbanes in cosponsoring the Armenian Genocide Resolution, S.Res.320, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

“We want to thank Minority Leader Reid, and Senators Dole and Sarbanes for joining with their colleagues in supporting this bipartisan resolution to put America on the right side of the Armenian Genocide issue,” said Aram Hamparian, Executive Director of the ANCA. “For far too long, our government has caved in to pressure – real and imagined – from a Turkish government that has, to our great shame, made Americans complicit in its lies about the Armenian Genocide.”

These additions bring to twenty-five the number of Senators supporting the measure, which was introduced late last year by John Ensign (R-NV) and Richard Durbin (D-IL). Similar to H.Res.316 in the U.S. House, the Senate resolution calls upon the President “to ensure that the foreign policy of the United States reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to human rights, ethnic cleansing, and genocide documented in the United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide.”

The Senate resolution has been referred to the Foreign Relations Committee for consideration. The House International Relations Committee overwhelmingly adopted its counterpart in September of last year.
